Really enjoyed the vibe at La Stalla - was warm and cosy, friendly staff and very yummy food. Especially enjoyed the steak main. The three course meal for restaurant week was great value for money. Thoroughly enjoyed all 6 meals I tasted. Will definitely go back. Also love Melville's buzz on a Friday.. and the comedy club is just across the road!
The experience was disappointing. I did not mind that we were the only lunchtime patrons. Lucky, our waiter was welcoming, but was replaced by another for some reason. Our starters were tasty. Our starters were tasty. Our main course pizza was the best, but the chicken was dry and difficult to swallow. On the original menu, this was served with a jus - don't know why they dropped it with the restaurant week menu. For what we got, I don't think it was fairly priced. May I suggest that this restaurant does not participate in the lunch section if restaurant week takes place next year.
We arrived to a quaint, beautiful restaurant. We were taken to a table set up especially for us. I saw that the menu was gluten and dairy full- I had asked that they please consider this as I am intolerant of both. The waiter then went to speak to the chef who kindly changed the starter for me so at least one course was gluten and dairy free. The food was very tasty, fresh and well presented. The service was great. We will definitely be back to this gem
The food was absolutely delicious, lovely ambience and the service is excellent. I had the crispy calamari with rocket, chilli and lemon mayo for starters and organic roasted pork belly on ciabatta for mains which was absolutely divine. For dessert I had a homemade nutella cheese cake with gelato. Will definitely be back soon.

About La Stalla
La Stalla
Chef James Diack’s latest restaurant venture is the new home of his previous American-inspired eatery, The Federal. He’s no stranger to the Joburg restaurant scene: his flagship Coobs is, of course, known to discerning food lovers, and following the success of a farm-to-table approach to dining at his Parktown North restaurant, Il Contadino, he has now opened this smaller version in Melville.
The produce used in the restaurant comes from his family-owned farm, Brightside, in Magaliesburg, so rest assured that farm-fresh is no exaggeration. La Stalla focuses on rustic Italian fare and the keyword here is simplicity in choice of ingredients, flavour combinations and presentation. The menu offers small plates, pizza, pasta, meaty mains and salads.
