Best tuna dish ever. The cheese soufflé was also great. Excellent service and worth a visit!

Read full reviewWe have steered away from the CBD for some time. However Pilcrow and Cleaver's (P&C) menu was enticing enough on the restaurant week website, to make a return. I am glad we did. It is an intimate restaurant with direct access and interaction to the small kitchen, which is incorporated with the seating area. Service was impeccable from the start. We were greeted with friendly smiles, and seated on high chairs at the window (though I wish that we were told before hand of this, as I prefer not to dine on high stools). The food was excellent. My wife had the springbok loin as a starter which was tender and delicious. I had the crumbed oyster and pan fried scallop, which was beautifully presented (though I still prefer my oysters raw). For the main I have the most beautifully prepared Kingklip -it was so very fresh, and tender -not many restaurants get Kinglklip right. My wife had the burger which she really enjoyed. I had the deconstructed Cranachan. The whisky soaked oats were overpowering, and the white chocolate on the plate was pasted too firmly onto the ceramic, which made it difficult to combine with the oats -it would have balanced off the whisky (hence 1 star less). The sorbet though was magnificent and had fresh spring notes. Overall this is a restaurant that I would highly recommend. We will definitely return.
Hi Shaun,
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a in detail review. I have taken on your suggestions and I agree with you, the cranachan needed that white chocolate to break it so it needed to be a bit more melted on the plate.
The seating arrangement is either counter seating ( church square view or chefs counter) then low seated tables and our private booths. If you had mentioned that you did not enjoy the high table one of our friendly chefs would have moved you. The counter seating is usually the most popular but like you said I should have called you before and confirmed that with you. That is my fault. Thank you again and I hope we get to cook for you again soon.
The service and cosy atmosphere (we ate in the bar area) were great. The food was also quite good, they are creative and inventive with their dishes. Some things had a good result, others weren't as successful for our tastes. Definitely worth visiting to try something new and different.
Hi There,

Pilcrow & Cleaver is the delicious brainchild of Chef Judi Fourie; a Cape Town restaurant fierce with bold modern flavours.
With no service staff, and no doors, windows or walls to our professional kitchen, Pilcrow & Cleaver puts you in direct contact with the chefs and cooks that make your food. We invite you to smell and anticipate modern European daily inspired menus of small plates, mains and desserts. Swirl a glass of proudly South African wine over dinner or unwind after work at our separate bar section. Browse our retail shelf’s homemade delicacies and contemplate a recipe in our bespoke cookbook collection. Or talk to us as we prepare homemade flavours right in front of you. We are pet-friendly, follow the no-tipping movement, the first restaurant in Cape Town to serve Father Coffee and during the COVID-19 lockdown we are still open for business.
Hi, I'm Chef Judi
And welcome to Pilcrow & Cleaver, a new paragraph with a different twist, something that I have dreamt about and cooked into realisation for the last 15 years.
The passion for food started to pulsate through my veins from a very young age and for the last decade I have been on a culinary journey of exploration around the world. My travels have inspired me to find new dishes, experience unique flavours and taste different food to bring it all together and share it with you from my kitchen at Pilcrow & Cleaver, right here, in the vibrant heart of Cape Town.
Food is an experiment-experience that evokes emotion. It is not perfection, it’s about expression. Cooking is an art, and the kitchen is my canvas and I want you to join me as a create dishes with a modern flair; highlighting the different unique flavours of each and every ingredient.
Let’s eat.
