The food came out in tapas style so we got to taste quite a few of their dishes. All the flavours worked well together and we enjoyed our food, we will definitely be back in the future. When we left, the restaurant was full and now we know why. Well done, keep up the amazing work.
Wonderful atmosphere, service and food!

Read full reviewHaving been to three previous dining establishments at this address, happy to report ëlgr seems to have got it right. It’s a very vibey space, indoor and outdoor dining with the resultant ambience. The Scandinavian influenced menu is unscripted with Chef’s suggestions, we both chose the vegetarian menu and thoroughly enjoyed three imaginative courses, of multiple dishes, none of which featured rice, pasta, legumes or potatoes! There’s an interesting cocktail list, which we chose over wine, albeit, pricier than most in Cape Town. As it’s tasting plates we thought we’d be in, and out, in no time, however, our meal took 2 and a half hours, it was a fun night. With winter on our doorstep, decide to take layers if you are going to sit outside. It’s not cheap but, it is very good value and, judging by a full complement of 90 diners on a Thursday, a very popular restaurant to add to our constellation of star restaurants. Happy days, yummy food!
Welcoming vibey atmosphere. Very competent friendly personnel and every morsel of food was just perfectly plated, significantly moderate portions and utterly delicious !

Chef Jesper Nilsson
Jesper, who hails from Sweden, trained at the Institute of Culinary Arts in Stellenbosch and has worked for Darren Badenhorst at Grande Provence, Richard Carstens at Tokara Restaurant and Arno Janse van Rensburg at The Kitchen at Maison, Franschhoek. To gain further experience in the international culinary scene, Jesper travelled first to New Zealand and then to Sweden, where he joined Andreas Dahlberg’s team at Bastard Restaurant in Malmö. On his return to South Africa Jesper reunited with Arno at Janse & Co. Jesper’s vision for elgr is fine food, great wine and inspiring cocktails, all served in a relaxed environment. Menus are seasonal and change often, with exceptional, original, yet uncomplicated flavours. The dishes are creatively presented with simple, fresh ingredients.
“I take inspiration from my Nordic background and combine it with my culinary experience from South Africa. I take pride in craftsmanship and strive to create dishes that are authentic, trying to understand not only the flavours but also the cultural background of each component in the dish. Limiting yourself to one particular style means you are defining the outcome before you go through the process.”
