Read full reviewMy first visit to Roots. Awesome venue, but left me somewhat disappointed. One gets the feeling that there once was a chef at Roots who loved their craft and loved to make food. This loving chef then trained some cooks to replicate his creations day in and day out. The love and passion was lost and i see this in the food. Its good but its missing something, the attention to detail, too much salt sometimes because not one tasted the food, bitter aubergines because someone followed a process and didn't think not to use the ends of the vegetable, no cream on a pavlova. So much for the food. From a service point of view pretty much the same, maybe I'm just a snob, but the staff are too carried away with how awesome they are to serve and remove dishes from the correct side, too busy being awesome to brush the bread crumbs from the table cloth, too busy swearing at each other to properly place required cutlery and remove cutlery that isn't required, too busy being friendly to understand and passionately explain what dish is being served.
Roots is a very special place. Everything is superb and meticulously curated from the decor to the food, the excellent service and the sommelier's pairings. It is worth a visit if you enjoy the finer things in life.

Jabulani was a brilliant waiter - very attentive and polite. Every single course was mouthwatering and so well balanced. The accompanying wine was well matched to each course too. I jokingly asked if we could have a second serving of the dessert as it was so delicious, and 2 minutes later 6 more plates of dessert arrived! I honestly cannot fault a single thing, and will definitely be back in future. Thank you for a perfect night Roots!!
We enjoyed a great night out at Roots. The service was excellent. The meal was beautifully presented and delicious. The lounge is a great place to relax with a drink in front of the fireplace while you wait to be seated.
We are regular patrons of Roots, which has never failed to offer us over the years the elegant complexity of succulent, trendy gourmet dining, in a tamed wilderness beautifully reminiscent of the bush, dotted with art pieces which invite us to reflect on our human origins.
