We were seated immediately and offered drinks. An appetizer tray of hummus, dried wors and balsamic drizzled toast was brought to the table for nibbling whilst we were perusing the interesting and varied menu.
We were intrigued by many of the specials on offer but ended up selecting our meals from the standard menu.
Pear & Baby Marrow Soup - pears, baby marrow, fresh cream and home made french loaf. The soup had a lovely delicate flavour, was nicely balanced and not too rich. It was served warm and not scalding, just as soup should be, with a lovely soft fresh bread.
Silver Orange Duck & Fig Samoosas - home made duck and fig samoosas served with red wine and plum puree. The samoosa fillings were delicious and meaty but the crust was a tad over fried. The sauce drizzled onto the plate was zesty and very flavoursome.
Gorgonzola Fillet - grilled beef fillet, Gorgonzola, red wine reduction, puree potato and seasonal vegetables. Despite the balance of flavours on this dish being just a bit off, the star anise a bit overwhelming and the red wine reduction just a bit too sweet, it was delicious. The fillet was prepared to perfection and the gorgonzola added a wonderful creaminess.
Caramelized Onion Fillet - grilled fillet, caramelized onion, braised red cabbage, butternut sauce, mashed potato. The fillet was perfect, served exactly as ordered and the mash was soft and creamy. The negative was that the vegetables were minimal, the pumpkin was dry and unpalatable, and the caramelized onion was bitter rather than goey and sweet.
The Chocolate & Cranberry Brownie was a huge disappointment as it was just a rather dry chocolate cake with cranberries dotting the plate for decoration.
The Flourless Dark Chocolate Citrus Cake was a bit of a misnomer as it was actually a very saucy, runny, chocolate pot. The orange provided a good zesty contrast to the deep chocolatey flavour.
We ended our meal with cuppaccino's, which we will not be ordering again, and we were sorry that we were driving and unable to dive headfirst into the extensive, excellent wines available.
Our servers were attentive at first but gradually we felt forgotten as they got involved with a large party seated outside. As there were only a few diners in doors, the music was too loud.
The positives however far outweighed the negatives and we will be visiting the Silver Orange Bistro again.
