Firstly, our booking was for 4 and 7 people arrived. We opted to sit at a table in the window which then became very hot. We were there for a leisurly afternoon and the table became too crammed and the seating uncomfortable after a while, especially for those on the cushion in the window.
Food wise, everything was enjoyable. We all ordered the arancini and the crispy calamari. Arancini very nice but everyone who had had them before felt they could have been better. Mains we had the port belly which was amazing. The only issue there was that the on portion was substantially smaller than the rest. The others had the paperdelle which was apparently very good but it was thought that the pasta was a bit too thick. The margarita pizza was good but was overpriced.
For dessert we had lemon tart which was beautiful and nuttella cheesecake which was very enjoyable and could not be faulted however the coffee was the star of the show. I don't think I have ever had better. Overall we enjoyed our afternoon thoroughly. The staff were excellent. The restaurant very attractive but a little too hot. The food very good. Tasty, good size portions just a little pricey in places.

About La Stalla
La Stalla
Chef James Diack’s latest restaurant venture is the new home of his previous American-inspired eatery, The Federal. He’s no stranger to the Joburg restaurant scene: his flagship Coobs is, of course, known to discerning food lovers, and following the success of a farm-to-table approach to dining at his Parktown North restaurant, Il Contadino, he has now opened this smaller version in Melville.
The produce used in the restaurant comes from his family-owned farm, Brightside, in Magaliesburg, so rest assured that farm-fresh is no exaggeration. La Stalla focuses on rustic Italian fare and the keyword here is simplicity in choice of ingredients, flavour combinations and presentation. The menu offers small plates, pizza, pasta, meaty mains and salads.
