The moment you walk into the restaurant you feel a sense of calm and relaxation. Beautiful decore, the aesthetic is not too busy, but rather thought provoking as majestic bonzai trees are placed inside the restaurant with porpoise. The tranquility is then matched by the music which is contemporary, but not overpowering.
The staff are just on another level of attentive. Young waiters showing so much pride in their work and taking time with each table.
Then of course the food. Wow the food. We loved every course and could see that so much time and love had been put into creating this menu. Such a sense of wonder and artistry.
We will definitely come back to experience this establishment again and we are thankful that restaurant week recommended it.

About Ōku
Cuisine: Japanese / Sushi, Vegetarian
Oku Franschhoek’s first Asian eatery
The highly anticipated opening of Ōku, the concept and vision of Chef/restaurateur duo Ryan Shell and Darren Badenhorst (Le coin Français, Le chêne and Tuk Tuk Microbrewery), is here.
The two acclaimed chefs, with over 30 years of hospitality experience, are pooling their culinary prowess to create Franschhoek’s first South East Asian eatery.
Total renovations of the interior and exterior ensure a purpose designed space to create a casual, calming and refined eating experience.
Conceptualised on a culinary exploration of Indonesia in 2013, Darren and Ryan were especially inspired by the Gili Islands.
The two chefs had ample time to refine the idea whilst working together to feed the Franschhoek community during the Covid-19 lock down period, resulting in a thoroughly conceptualised, authentic and flavour packed food and beverage offering.
Bookings essential to avoid disappointment.
