I booked the Red Chamber because I was told that this was the best Chinese restaurant in Johannesburg. Unfortunately I was really disappointed, the service was poor, the set menu didn't feel like fair value given the quality of the food. When we asked to see the main menu the staff were rude and unhelpful and the menu confusing. I wouldn't eat here again.

Read full reviewWe really didn't enjoy our dining experience last night. Red Chamber was one of our favourite restaurants and all 6 guests were looking forward to the meal. Firstly, our options for the Restaurant Week special were not explained to us and when we asked a waitress what the story was, she told us we could either order off the set menu or off the regular menu. As nothing on the set menu appealed (and we worked out that the R175 'special' was more expensive than what we wanted to eat), we ordered off the regular menu. When the manager realised this (about halfway through our main course) and started shouting at the waiter, we called her over to explain what had happened and she summarily dismissed us. The food-starters were ok but arrived sporadically so we all ate at different times-there was half an hour between the first and last dish arriving. Main course was abonimable. The food was ice cold, drowned in a thick, sugary tomato sauce (4 of us ordered our normal favourite and were very disappointed) and portion sizes of the same dish varied dramatically. We asked for the food to be heated up, which some of it was and the dishes were combined so we no longer each had our own portion. Ice cream was brought to the table, obviously as part of the special, but seeing as we had ordered off the regular menu, we were confused and would not otherwise have all ordered it which would have made our meals cheaper. Positives: our waiter was trying his best in a crowded and chaotic restaurant and was as friendly and helpful as could be. When the bill came, we were charged the R175 set price instead of the more expensive (due to the ice cream) itemised bill.
All in all, an unpleasant dining experience.
Food was delicious and the ambience most pleasant...
Meal was excellent...service very good, excellent staff...lighting a bit dark for a later afternoon lunch...2-course menu was great value for money
