"Restaurant Week rip off"
8.0 Cuisine 8 | Service 8 | Atmosphere 8

We enjoyed an excellent meal and the service was good, however we paid R250 through Restaurant Week for a meal that on the menu would have cost R202! What a ripoff!

We were supposed to have our Restaurant Week lunch at So Yum at Hyde Park today - we were so underwhelmed by the menu we decided to rather order from their actual menu. The Restaurant Week special lunch menu consisted of chicken skewers followed by a fish dish. I wasn't impressed and decided to rather order their dim sum. I find it a bit disappointing that they didn't have an option for each course, even just two each would have been sufficient.

That being said, their dim sum wasn't bad. It arrived quickly. The duck fried wonton was the best, followed by the money bags (filled with chicken). The pork honey bbq filled bun was ok, I have had better.

I ordered some garlic rice for takeaway to have at home later because I had read somewhere it was soooo good. It really isn't. I tried it when I got home and they must have forgotten the garlic.

Overall it wasn't a bad experience, but I wouldn't go back for the dim sum. I do want to give their mains and sushi a try though, what was coming out of the kitchen looked good. Service was fine.

We had the dim sum and it was So Yum (pun intended), possibly the best we've had in South Africa! Our food was beautifully presented and the service was great. All and all a delicious experience.

The good was amazing, and the service excellent. Being in a mall the restaurant lacked a cozy feeling.

To start with, the restaurant didn't have us down as a restaurant week booking, in fact they didn't have us reserved at all.
They did have a couple open tables, so that wasn't a problem.
As a result of this, we decided to not go for the restaurant week menu, as it actually didn't look that exciting, and we liked the look of some of the other things on the menu (plus the restaurant week menu wasn't shown online, and on the day there were no choices, just a single specified starter-main-dessert combo, and it included some items we'd specified that we didn't eat, i.e. Chicken)
We did actually have 1 portion of the restaurant week mains, and dessert.
Between the 2 of us we landed up with:
1* steamed Pork buns
1* prawn pot sticker style thingy
1* garlic rice
1* sizzling beef
1* lamb shank
1* Thai silk
1* fried seseme seed chocolate balls
4* cocktails
Overall the food was good, nothing too special tho.
Total cost with tip R800.
The Pork bun starters seemed a bit over done and very bready.
The garlic rice was delicious.
The lamb shank was v small, and covered in a coconut curry sauce, a bit weird at first, but actually not too bad.
The Thai silk was declicious, but the seseme chocolate balls were below average at best. Very doughie, and the chocolate used didn't taste great at all.
The cocktails where goodies.
There isn't much of an atmosphere to speak of, the restaurant is basically splt into 3, and it's more of an eat and go kind of place.
The service was at the minimum level that you would expect.

I was happy to try a new place, but won't be back, as I think there are places where I can get a far better meal for 2 people for 800 bucks.

About So Yum

Cuisine: Asian, Chinese

“Yum Cha”, an age old Chinese cuisine style, celebrates the unique culinary art of Dim Sum. It is this inimitable gastronomic offering which So Yum presents as a haven for friends, family and colleagues to gather in appreciation of healthy, fresh, wholesome and ultimately – premium quality food and drink.

The soul of our restaurant rests in Dim Sum, which aptly translates to 'touch the heart'. Our heavenly, bite sized morsels are filled with a variety of high quality meat, seafood and vegetable fillings. Each parcel is individually prepared with great skill and care, before being steamed, baked or pan-fried – according to your personal preference.

Our extensive Dim Sum menu is complemented by exquisite flowering and fragrant teas, which will not only aid digestion, but also stimulate your already burgeoning appetite. The pleasure of the Dim Sum dining experience has evolved over many years. Today, many enjoy and accept this art as a staple dining culture; where many or merely a few dishes can be ordered and savoured at any sitting.

Our assiduously selected menu also offers sensational Asian style salads, aromatic curries, wok stir-fries, as well as a delectable assortment of noodle dishes. All original recipes are lovingly executed to maintain the authenticity of the four main Asian flavours, namely: sweet, sour, spicy and salty.

Adding to this, our beverage selection is the toast of the town with, amongst others, freshly squeezed vegetable and fruit juices to live for. Languish in our beautiful flowering and aromatic teas, which are allowed to draw naturally in exclusively designed tea pots. For something a little more risqué, sip on our sublimely mixed cocktail menu featuring classics such as Cosmopolitans, Mojitos and Margaritas, or alternatively, turn to our excellent array of locally produced South African wines.

Whether it's a quick, healthy meal that you crave, an intimate dinner with your partner, a business luncheon, or celebratory gathering with family and friends – So Yum is the ideal culinary experience for the vibrant individual.
