Read full reviewThe ambiance is OK, but not great. I always have a problem with a Restaurant having the prime area adjacent to the windows as a smoking section with the non-smokers tucked in at the back -although this area is roomy. The temperature fluctuated between stuffy and cold as the aircon was switched on and off during the evening. It would have been a lot more comfortable with natural ventilation on such a beautiful evening -but due to the smoking section at the front, not possible.
Service was very friendly and inviting, but a bit slow. The wine list showed good promise when it was received -looked professional with a nice map of the SA wine areas, but the selection of wines varietals is limited -we normally drink Sauvignon Blanc to start with but there were no 'whow' wines on the list. There are a few good value for money Chardonnays and blends though. If you are serious about your red wine and is not prepared to pay a few hundred rand for important wine (that there are a few good ones), take your own SA wine!
Finally the food -everything we had was good but again not whow. I did not realise that it was a fixed menu when I booked for the Restaurant week -please make that very clear next time and supply the fixed menus -or perhaps I just missed it. But especially the main course choices were limited -one vegetarian, one chicken and one venison (warthog). I know many people that would frown at a limited choice menu without steak or fish. We had the warthog that was really nice -but after two weeks in Europe I was craving for good steak.
A little of a let down - as the menu of the restaurant was much more appetizing than what was on the menu for the dinner week.
As part of restaurant week we booked a 3 course meal. Good food and atmosphere. Service acceptable, but do not ask for the following: keep side plate of bread on the table till the end of the meal or if the pudding can be substituted for strong coffee (Americano). We did and we received one big cold shoulder and one spilled, below par coffee without milk.
Execellent food, great and friendly staff, atmosphere. They will see me again....
