It did not take long to figure out why. The owner sat in front on his laptop and did not so much as look up at us. He was the only one sitting in the restaurant. There was a palpable tension in the air. After walking in, we weren't sure if we were going to be greeted. Eventually, a very timid and unsure waitress emerged from behind the bar. From her body language it felt as if she had just been verbally abused by someone and was still recovering.
The restaurant is exceptionally small and shortly after entering another waitress started ironing in the middle of the restaurant. We very quickly realised that we weren't interested in eating at Spice on Main but asked to see the menu none the less. There is a set-menu or small plates. Neither appealed to us. There is zero ambience (negative atmosphere in our opinion) and there was no sign of restaurant week. When we told the waitress that we had booked for restaurant week she had only vague recognition of what we were talking about in her eyes.
I rate the service two stars because I feel sorry for that waitress. The restaurant as a whole should receive zero.
Food was generally fine, but the Spice Prawn maindish was a disaster - severely overcooked and din not taste good at all. Our waitress was very sweet, young and unexpirenced - unfortuately the more expirenced staff did not have "time" to supervise her, at least 2 was sitting doing nothing while she was struggling to do things right. Very very poor supervision of the poor girl !
Although an all-round good experience, improvement can occur in all areas, especially service and wine knowledge.
An amazing taste bud experience, with some interesting yet classic food options, with a lovely ambiance.
We really enjoyed our night at Spice and will certainly return. The Crayfish tails with Calamari and pork custard was fabulous and the seared Tuna was definitely a firm favourite.
The host did his best to ensure we were well looked after and created a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
