The food is absolutely incredible. If you're looking for some of the best food in Cape Town / South Africa / Africa, then look no further: make the trip and visit Cheyne's in Hout Bay!
The service was great, but the food was better. The combination of eastern spices and techniques was brilliant and full of aroma. Added to that was the flexibility of their menu available to the restaurant week diners. In one meal i was able to get a full taste experience of the cuisine they have to offer and i was well pleased.
In a city full of culinary pretentension, Cheyne's has an authenticity that comes straight from the man himself.

We enjoyed the set menu during restaurant week - and it was amazing to see the imaginative dishes the Chefs created and how they differed from his existing menu which is equally as creative. The Keralan spiced Patagonian squid was my favourite, and the subtly of the coconut jelly was masterful. The tuna tempura and jasmine tea smoked duck came in close second and luckily each dish was a well-considered size to allow me to make room for the next... and the next, and the next.
Every dish was artfully presented and everything on the plate served a purpose to compliment the overall meal. We were served by Chris who was warm and attentive. We enjoyed a laugh with him and he entertained our questions as we made our way through each course. The suggested wine pairings were spot-on and
Cheyne made an effort to come out from the kitchen and greet a table of new-founded fans who sat next to us. Modest and proud, Cheyne gave all the credit to his team of kitchen maestros.
The ambiance is simple and the food is the hero. People were smart, casual, young and and old, all accommodated at the tables that suit everything from bigger family dinners to quiet romantic evenings. We also enjoyed a break between courses outside by the fire pit - a lovely addition to this intimate space.
After dinner, Chris even helped us arrange a taxi home!
This place is a gem, the passion is tangible and the food continues to evolve and impress me.
