"Outstanding foodie experience"

We were fascinated, titillated and totally involved with our five course meal and wine pairing. The food was outstanding, the service informative and friendly and we rated the wine quality highly too. A corked wine was handled professionally and with grace and new servings were poured in clean glasses. We loved the experience.

Gåte at Quoin Rock Wines
Stellenbosch

So yesterday we paid a visit to Gåte at Quoin Rock Wines as part of restaurant week and we were treated to an amazing gastronomy experience.

As we arrived we were greeted by a friendly and enthusiastic Shaun, our waiter for the day, who showed us to our table in their dining area. Bongani was our Sommelier and was an expert.

We had their "Day time Experience" Menu, which consisted of 5 courses and a glass of wine with each dish.

We started with a Watermelon and popping candy palate cleanser. As palate cleansers go this was one of the best I've had. Popping candy sounded like it was sizzling on the dish.

The second dish was something out of this world. Called "Not an Ashtray" this was, in fact, the bread dish. A rye bread that looked like a cigar which you dipped into ash which was garlic and butter with charcoal and dehydrated tomato. This was paired with their Quoin Rock Chardonnay 2017.

Next, we had the Cured Oysters. Served over a smoulder nitrogen and was visually amazing. This was paired with their MMC Brut 2014. Which was fresh, fruity and easy to drink.

Our salad dish was the Caprese. A frozen ice shell which was melted but a warm basil and olive oil. Sweet cherry tomatoes stuffed with jelly and mozzarella cheese. This was paired with Namysto Sauvignon Blanc Semillion. This was my dish of the day!!

Our main meal was The Duck with bulger wheat pickled pear, mozzarella and fennel. This was paired with two red wines, Quoin Rock Shiraz 2015 and Quoin Rock Red Blend 2015. The duck was tender and delicious.

For dessert, we had a Black Pearl creme brulee. An edible white chocolate shell, Orange sorbet. Paired with Quoin Rock Vine Dried 2017.

This was an experience of note. Will have to come back and try the Gourmet Menu - which I believe is a 16-course tasting menu.

I can’t wait to come back here and Gåte at Quoin Rock Wines remains on our revisit list. Gåte at Quoin Rock Wines' Teeth rating:
Food: 10 "teeth" out of 10
Service and Staff: 9 "teeth" out of 10
Ambience: 9 "teeth" out of 10
Overall: 28 "teeth" out of 30

Surprise, surprise - the whole lunch was a surprise.
First surprise the very modern building of Quoin Rock in Knorrhoek valley.
Second surprise the food - guided by our waitress Sulezi - we didn't have a look onto the menu and so we were always surprised getting course by course of the 5-course-menu.

Its a very different way of presenting food and we really enjoyed the very tasty and
delicious dishes.
