The setting at The Restaurant at Neethlingshof is wonderful and the historic homestead in which the restaurant is housed is fantastic. While the interior is quite adequate and comfortable, it does lack a bit of "warmth".
Likewise, the service we received from Clint was quite satisfactory albeit lacking in attention...

Likewise, the service we received from Clint was quite satisfactory albeit lacking in attention to the finer details of fine dining.
The food, however, was exquisite. To quote my wife, "The beetroot starter was possibly the best starter I've ever had." While I might not go as far, it certainly ranks in the top few I have had the privilege of enjoying. The earthiness of the beetroot, zest of the citrus jellies, creaminess of the cheese and crunch of the "fairy hair" pastry not only complimented each other in their taste profiles but also in their textures. This was a seriously good dish.
The pork belly was done just the way I like it - tender enough to pull while firm enough not to fall apart. The sticky glaze was not at all cloying while being sweet enough to balance the spicy heat of the crispy Arancini. These two components were magically brought together by a healthy portion of cold pickled red cabbage and grilled Bok Choy - both adding a lot of freshness and crunch.
The desert offered (?) the only real room for criticism in that the size of the portion was too generous for me. Deconstructed lemon curd with wonderfully-buttery biscuits, more citrus jellies, diced strawberry and lime segments had just the right amount of sweetness for the end of a wonderful dinner while having the requisite tartness to keep the belt buckled in the car on the way home.
Can't wait for the next Restaurant Week.
Everything, wine, food, ambience and the waiters where of top quality! Thank you!
A wonderful way to end our restaurant week. After a hectic week, it was wonderful to be treated to a wonderful (tasty) meal within a wonderful (beautiful) environment with a wonderful (humorous, attentive) waitress. Definitely will return in future.
I felt that food was good but that dessert could have been better.
Old world charm meets modern cuisine. Stunning surroundings, friendly attendant staff and world class food. I had the three course restaurant week special, each course better than the last. A truly memorable experice.
