We were disappointed with the fact that we could only choose from two dishes for each course. The main course was particularly disappointing. There was only (minced) duck and Carpenter fish on the menu. The desert was good ( I had the banana bread) Waiters seem a bit unsure of themselves.

We tried to book for either of the two weekends of restaurant week. According to the website, Newton Johnson was full. So I had to settle for a Friday. Apparently, according to the manager, this was not the case. As it was, there were only 4 tables occupied (8 guests) The view is spectacular though.
All in all we had expected more, especially because of the R50 pp surcharge.
This could be stunning.. Portions a bit on the small side, and pricey.. Will be back when in the area..

The refinement in their dishes is unreal - such well-balanced and complementary flavours - and they absolutely master the art of plating, yet without going over the top! These guys don't need gimmicky plates or dishes, every ingredient, every topping, every flavour is there for a reason. You can simply taste that the chef and his team is having fun in that (open) kitchen, and he is having even more fun surprising you and letting you taste and discover it all. Although the restaurant itself may be waiting for a makeover, the view on the Hemel & Aarde Valley is more than stunning. We were here for Restaurant Week, which was an absolute treat and possibly even ridiculously under-priced. We will definitely make our way out to this hidden gem more often.
One of the best drives in the Western cape leads to my favourite restaurant in SA. Chef Eric Bulpitt is doing an amazing job in the remote – if you happen to live in Cape Town – gem in the Hemel en Aarde Valley, which in my opinion trumps the Stellenbosch/Franschhoek area when it comes to natural beauty. The only point of critique would be that the interior could use an upgrade, but the view definitely makes up for that. World-class dining experience!
What a great lunch to end off our restaurant week. Excellent food (hats off to the chef), faultless service (thanks to all the waiters) and all together wonderful experience. Will definitely see us again.

About The Restaurant at Newton Johnson
Cuisine: Fine Dining
The Restaurant at Newton Johnson is a modern South African eatery. A space where contemporary and bygone cuisine is combined with relaxed yet precise service. The restaurant showcases local, seasonal produce, bringing a piece of the Overberg to the table.
Chef Eric Bulpitt and his team have a common respect for nature and the produce it offers and, intelligently combine them on the plate. Together they are constantly discovering and sourcing new and forgotten ingredients. Preserving, pickling, fermenting, smoking and open fire cooking embodies their cuisine.
The kitchen is the place where creativity flows. Menus are concise, allowing for more focus and are constantly evolving with the seasons. There is a sense of freedom as the menus are spontaneously changed.
