We enjoyed the starter and the dessert, but my main course (the mushroom pasta) lacked salt and tasted like it was a product of large scale cooking. All in all, a lovely evening out though.
Menu choices were very limited with only two choices per course. Choice of Sous Vide Chicken was dry and tasteless, vegetables very bland and reminiscent of baby food, however the special of the Kabeljou and Kingklip was divine! The stated amuse-bouche never appeared. The wine list was over priced. Desert was a show...

Service was impeccable, and our waiter attentive and knowledgable.
Overall a disappointing experience considering the additional charge per person.
My Beetroot starter was very tasty and well presented. My partner's Ceaser Salad should never appear on any menu, ever - the Chef should be ashamed of himself. My supposed to be tender Sous Vide Chicken was dry and tasteless - a smear of souse did not help. However, the peanut butter aubergine was delicious. The pas...

The strawberry sorbet was lovely. The Berry Crème Brulee was exceptional. The service was very good.

We had an excellent lunch at Piccolo Mondo.
Nice touches like the amuse-bouche and basil berry sorbets between courses were a nice touch.
As was the bread basket with olive oil and balsamic.

Different takes on beetroot with lovely cheese balls coated in smoked beetroot dust. Beautiful striking crimson puree.
Then a salad of roasted baby tomotoes nestled in dried onion casings with Basil jellies and an absolutely delicious Parmesan parfait. Some olive tapenade – was very nice but probably unnecessary as the dish was quite tart already.
My vegetarian meal of Papparedelle caponata with bringal, pine nuts and mushrooms was probably one of the best pastas I have had. A nice open pasta with no cream and only a little oil. Perfect flavours.
My partner’s chicken dish was beautifully presented and although he is not a brinjal, turnip, peanut butter fan, he said it was delicious. It was not overbearing and added to the sous-vide method of cooking the chicken.
As we were satiated, we didn't order dessert.
The service unfortunately let the experience down a bit.
Although the restaurant only had two other tables on the go, we were presented with the menu (which could possibly have done with an addition of a red meat course) and the waiter disappeared.
We had to ask for a wine menu, which took a little while. Whilst are waiter was new to the job, they had a more experienced waiter keeping an eye on him. No problem, everyone has to learn somehow.
My partner started with a beer, but when he asked for a glass to accompany me in the bottle I was steadily polishing off, he got brought another beer. All good for me! The wine list was on the expensive side. To be expected in Sandton I guess.
The atmosphere? Hmmm. My feeling is, it's all too hotelly. Those typical hotel carpets and chairs, and buffet stands dotted around. No real music, so you feel like you have to whisper. And the main problem, no people. I feel uncomfortable eating in an empty restaurant. Then that last touch, you know, where you have to wave your arm in the air for the bill, and you're sitting with an empty glass? Luckily we were visible enough.
But overall, well worth a visit for the food experience.
Lovely experience; food was great, service slick and friendly, setting feels very grand.

About Piccolo Mondo
Cuisine: Fine Dining, Italian
Flair, adventure and culinary delight are at the heart of the menu at the Piccolo Mondo Restaurant. Designed not to just feed the appetite and appease the taste buds, several of the dishes bring with them a visual signature never seen before.
“The clientele of the Piccolo Mondo, and in fact the Michelangelo hotel in general, is so diverse that we have to create a very delicate balance between food that is fashionable, contemporary yet modern, food that has a wow factor, must be mainly food that is tasty and appeases all our clienteles’ discerning palates,” says, executive chef Trevor Boyd at the Michelangelo Hotel.
The menu captures nuances of all the components a menu needs to set us apart from other restaurants out there. “We believe that our new menu will cater for not only the business weary traveller and the erstwhile tourist, but also the many visitors we see popping in for a meal on their visit to the Nelson Mandela Square.”
